Louise Reed
I completed my undergrad training in Bachelor of Arts Speech and Hearing Therapy at the University of Witwatersrand. Thereafter I worked at Charlotte Maxeke Johannesburg Academic Hospital (the old Jo'burg Gen) for three and a half years. It was during this time that my passion and love for children with complex communication needs was born. This is why I furthered my studies to complete a Master of Science in Medicine Child Health Neurodevelopment at the University of Witwatersrand.
I enjoy working with all children and their families, especially those with with special needs who require assistance with their communication and/or feeding skills. I have a passion for developing augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) systems to give a voice to those who can't usually be heard. I believe every child has a say and sometimes we just have to figure out how they can say it.
I have completed the Basic NDT/SANDTA course, the PROMPT introduction course, PODD, and the Makaton enhancement course. I also have experience with implementing and building on the Grid for iPad for children who need a form of communication while we work on their speech production. I love finding ways of integrating AAC systems into the classroom as well as educating those about Makaton.
I am also a mother of two incredible young children who have helped shape me into the therapist I am today. They have and still use Makaton to augment their speech when they need to fall back on gestures and love testing out any new communication methods/devices I am building. This helps me give practical advice to parents and gives me ideas of what vocabulary should be used.
Basically I love what I do!!!
